Steven Smith
Senior Associate
Biography
With over a decade of experience in insurance law, Steven brings a broad range of expertise to the SDV Fenchurch team. Resident of the firm’s Connecticut office, Steven’s practice is primarily focused on the firm’s Subcontractor Insurance Review Program (SIRP). He works closely with project owners and contractors to assess and refine contracts and insurance policies, aiming to optimize risk transfer strategies and ensure clients are well-protected if claims arise.
Experience
Prior to joining SDV Fenchurch, Steven worked in private equity. Most recently, he worked with an AI-powered legal technology platform to draft and negotiate non-disclosure and joinder agreements for American and Canadian leading private equity firms. Before that, Steven spent nearly a decade demonstrating strong business and investment acumen, helping launch four closed-end insurance-linked investment funds representing more than $70 million in investor capital. Steven executed those investment strategies from inception through fund maturity, including entity formation and setup, managing licensing requirements with state insurance departments, and overseeing the purchase and sale of fund assets. He has been instrumental in securing lines of credit, negotiating commercial contracts, and implementing HIPAA privacy policies and anti-fraud measures, ensuring regulatory compliance as a former compliance officer.
Steven has significant experience in healthcare law, routinely challenging healthcare reimbursement liens in personal injury matters and working extensively with ERISA, Medicaid, Medicare, and Medicare Advantage plans to contest subrogation and recovery rights. He has successfully eliminated ERISA, Medicaid, and Medicare liens for clients, challenged Medicare reimbursement claims through the administrative appeals process, and regularly presented on healthcare reimbursement issues at state bar association events, CLE programs, and legal seminars.
