Biography

Alex is the Head of SDV Fenchurch’s UK Property and Real Estate practice group. He advises policyholders on a broad range of complex insurance disputes and is frequently instructed in relation to significant property damage claims, major fire losses, business interruption matters and technically challenging coverage disputes. His fire loss practice includes both first-party property damage claims and third-party liability exposures, and frequently involves disputes concerning compliance with fire safety and risk management requirements, including the interpretation and effect of hot works conditions.
Before joining SDV Fenchurch, Alex trained and qualified at a leading City law firm, where he gained experience in commercial litigation and insurance disputes. Since then, he has dedicated his career exclusively to acting for policyholders, helping businesses navigate complex coverage issues and secure recoveries under their insurance policies.

Alongside his legal practice, Alex is a prominent speaker at industry conferences, seminars and webinars, and regularly delivers training to brokers, loss assessors, property professionals and other insurance market stakeholders. His presentations frequently focus on underinsurance, business interruption, remedies for non-disclosure and misrepresentation, and the practical operation of the Insurance Act 2015, with an emphasis on translating complex legal principles into clear, practical guidance.

Alex is also a recognised commentator on insurance and coverage issues and regularly publishes articles on developments affecting policyholders and the wider insurance market. He has written extensively on topics including policy interpretation, underinsurance, business interruption and professional indemnity insurance. He is frequently quoted in leading industry publications such as Insurance Business, the Insurer, and Insurance Age, and is a regular contributor to LexisNexis Practical Guidance and other legal and industry commentary. His training sessions are recognised for making complex coverage issues accessible and relevant to brokers, policyholders, claims professionals and other industry stakeholders.

Experience

Alex has particular expertise in insurance coverage disputes arising under the Insurance Act 2015 and is regularly instructed in matters involving non-disclosure, misrepresentation, fair presentation of risk, inducement and insurers’ remedies. He also advises on disputes concerning policy conditions, warranties and risk management requirements, often in the context of high-value contested claims.
He has developed a recognised specialism in fire-related losses, particularly those arising from hot works activities. His experience includes advising the owner of a waste recycling facility following a major fire loss, where insurers alleged breaches of policy requirements relating to waste storage and management. He has also acted for a commercial contractor in a high-value liability insurance dispute involving an alleged breach of a hot works condition, and for a plastics recycling business pursuing a multi-million-pound claim following a significant fire.
Alex’s practice also encompasses construction, property damage and professional indemnity disputes. Recent work includes advising the owner of a major luxury shopping centre on the recovery of costs associated with defective façade materials and acting for claimants seeking to enforce a substantial judgment against the professional indemnity insurers of an insolvent construction subcontractor.
He regularly acts in matters resolved through mediation and commercial settlement, whilst also having substantial litigation experience in the High Court and other specialist dispute resolution forums.
